Sarah-Jane Cobley

BSc (Hons) Herbal Medicine)

Herbalist at Dandelion Herbs

I gained my professional qualification from the University of East London after completing a degree course in Herbal Medicine over the course of 10 years on a part-time basis.  My studies included modules in botany, material medica, human physiology, medical microbiology, phytochemistry, pharmacology, clinical diagnosis, nutrition, pharmacy, pathology, clinical medicine, differential diagnosis, herbal therapeutics, business studies and research.

Also, as part of the course, I carried out 500 hours working within our busy London university herbal medicine clinic both observing consultations and taking my own patients.  Here I gained experience in taking the patient health history, carrying out physical examinations, diagnosis, management plans, prescription writing, medicine dispensing and follow-ups.  My training enabled me to treat and support a wide range of ailments from all of the body systems including cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, reproductive, musculoskeletal, nervous systems, and skin.

Our treatment approach aims to nourish and restore the body back to its natural functioning.  As herbalists we have knowledge of hundreds of herbs including both western ones and more exotic varieties.  However, our depth of understanding allows us to prescribe using our knowledge of their medicinal actions and so we need only stock a total of about 40 herbs.  A herbalist stock will reflect the favour of our herbalist community, our own personal relationship with the herbs and direct patient experience, and as such is unique to each herbalist.  Just as a herbalists dispensary is unique to the herbalist, so is a patients prescription to that particular individual.  As holistic practitioners, we treat the whole person and not 'their' disease.
